This 12-week distance learning course introduces the key functions of the operations department in shipping organisations. It provides an essential guide to those working in (or aiming to work in) ship operations, as well as those seeking a deeper understanding of how the global shipping industry functions.

Operators' top priority is to ensure the safe, smooth and economical running of their principals' fleet and to ensure that the fleet's contractual obligations are met.
The operations department is the main coordinator between the Board of Directors, the Executives, the company’s various departments, the vessels under management, the charterers, and all third parties involved with the ships (ship agents, ship-chandlers, bunkering suppliers, shippers, receivers, stevedores, etc.)
The department is also responsible for evaluating and reporting overall fleet performance, condition and maintenance including safety and running costs.
Among other things, it is the duty of the operations department to:
·         Provide post-fixture support to the vessels
·         Issue voyage instructions
·         Ensure ships perform as per the charterparty agreements
·         Ensure the safe and efficient carriage and delivery of cargoes
·         Supervise the disbursement of all funds necessary to run the ships
·         Arrange for freight / hire / demurrage collection from charterers
·         Arrange for the provision of the vessels with bunkers.
It is also imperative to co-ordinate the implementation of, and compliance with, the plethora of ever-changing maritime codes and regulations governing international shipping.
