Change over to Emergency or Local Operation
Local
operation of the engine could be required when:
•
The
Bridge control unit has failed (power supply loss ?)
•
The
limits of the Bridge control system are preventing the required operation of
the engine (thermal limitations, scavenge air limiter, etc)
•
The
main engine governor has failed.
Note
that if the start system (automatic valve, cylinder start air valve, or
reversing servo unit) has failed, then changing to emergency control will not
resolve the problems.
Procedure
for change-over
1.
Contact
the Bridge and ask to stop the main engine
2.
Go
to the local control and change over the control position to emergency control
using the control selector switch/lever
3.
Change
over the control of the fuel pump from the governor to the local control
lever/wheel. This will dis-engage the governor control
4.
You
can now operate the system locally, by
•
Accept
the telegraph command from the Bridge
•
Move
the direction lever into the required ahead or astern position
•
Move
the start lever or depress the start button to open the automatic valve
•
When
the engine has started, release the start lever
•
Move
the fuel control lever to achieve the desired speed
Note that the duration of air admission and
quantity of fuel delivered are all dependant upon the operator, as all engine
protection has been over-ridden
