In this method, the arc is ‘submerged’ under a layer
of granulated flux, poured along the weld joint from a tube connected to the
flux hopper The electrode is copper coated filler wire, fed into the arc by
wire feed rollers which are automatically controlled by a motor. The electrode
and flux fuse together with the joint the flux providing a protective blanket.
Any unused flux may be recovered and re-used The flux also thermally insulates
the arc, providing for a high concentration of heat and making the process
extremely efficient, with heavy deposits possible in quick time. The process is
suitable for downhand welds only with backing. It is commonly used in the
shipping industry for joints of 25 mm thickness or more.
