VACUUM SEWAGE SYSTEM

MARINESHELF publishes articles contributed by seafarers and other marine related sites solely for the benefit of seafarers .All copyright materials are owned by its respective authors or publishers.
This system is based on a daily flow of 10 litres per person using 1.2 litres of water per flush. The holding tank is at atmospheric pressure, the pressure switch maintains a vacuum in the line from the toilets by auto start‑stop of centrifugal pump. The sewage in the tank is used as driving water for the eductor.

Float switches may be used to control the discharge from the holding tank to the sewage treatment plant whilst still maintaining the vacuum in the system; alternatively the collecting tank can form the first stage of an aerobic treatment plant.

Advantages:                Small size
Can be positioned with greater flexibility compared to aerobic plant, wc’s can be below tank.
No chance of foul gases entering accommodation due to positive isolation.

Disadvantages:            Increased maintenance
                                    Specialist equipment required
                                    Vacuum can be dangerous
