ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM

This system is fitted to convey the required engine direction and speed from the bridge to the engine room personnel. Under normal bridge control of the main engine the telegraph function is disconnected, but in engine room control the bridge control lever converts to becoming a transmitter/receiver for the bridge/engine room communications link. Note that the telegraph system is powered from a separate supply than the bridge control panel.

As well as the standard bell ringing when bridge and engine telegraphs are not aligned, the telegraph system also indicates:

·           Wrong way alarm. This indicates that the engine room telegraph and engine rotation are opposite. This is indicated by the wrong way light and dedicated alarm bell.
·           Failure of remote system power supply. Indicates that the engine can no longer operate from bridge control. Note this failure could also disable the control room control, and emergency control could be required.
·           Internal failure. Indicates a communication failure between the telegraph panels

·           FWE/Stand By/At Sea. These indicators are fitted to supplement the engine telegraph orders.
