Simulated Manned Engine Room
Fire
Objectives
·
Expose crew to the potential origin,
nature, and control of engine room (ER) fires and related personnel
injuries.
·
Instruct ER personnel as to the location of fire
fighting stations, systems and equipment throughout ER.
·
Instruct ER in step-wise procedures in the
evaluation and control of ER fires based
on the potential nature of the fire.
·
Instruct deck and steward department on their
support roles in ER fires and emergencies.
·
Exercise crew in the implementation of above
procedures and methods under simulated fire conditions.
Fire nature & origin
Combustibles
(A) Electrical (B) Fuel (C)
Discuss
probable examples of each
Discuss
probable level of hazard of each
Injury to personnel - asphyxiation; electric shock; burns;
- Discuss examples as appropriate
Fire evaluation and control
Manned engine room
- On sight initial fire response
- Notify bridge
- Assess hazard and ER safety
- Evacuate as appropriate based on assessment
- Muster - evaluate injuries / location of missing personnel
Shut down
- Fuel and electrical supply as appropriate ventilation
- Notify bridge of missing personnel-search/rescue effort assemble search & rescue and fire response teams
- Assemble fire fighting equipment and support personnel
- Assign team duties including:
- Support teams: hose team - fire /rescue team
- Discharge fixed co2 system per master’s orders
Un-manned engine room
·
Muster - evaluate injuries / location
of missing personnel
- Assess hazard and safety of ER personnel
- Do not enter ER alone
- Do not enter ER without established radio communications
Notify bridge of
intent to enter ER
- Shut down fuel and electrical supply as appropriate
- Shut down ventilation
- Notify bridge of missing personnel-search/rescue efforts
- Assess fire and control strategies
- Assemble search & rescue and fire response teams
- Assemble fire fighting equipment and support personnel
- Assign team duties including:
- Support team: hose team - fire /rescue team
- Discharge fixed co2 system per master’s orders
Fire simulation -
manned ER
- Discuss on sight initial fire response
- Notify bridge
- Assess hazard and ER personnel safety
- Evacuate as appropriate based on assessment
- Muster - evaluate injuries / location of missing personnel
- Shut down: fuel and electrical supply and ventilation as appropriate
- Notify bridge of missing personnel-search/rescue effort
- Assemble fire fighting equipment and support personnel
Assign team duties
- Hose team from main ER entrance (port side main deck fog simulation, dry hose)
- Fire /rescue team assess probable location of missing ER personnel (simulate rescue & support procedures)
- Support team provide
- 15 co2 and #10 dry chemical extinguishers (spares located: ER main entrance main deck CO2 room main deck)
- Ax
- Fog nozzle
- Fire blanket
- Stokes liter
- First aid kit
- Support team provide first aid, enter ER locate & extract injured ER personnel per bridge/ER assessment
Recap and evaluate drill
simulation
·
Emphasize important points including:
- Muster & stay with team members
- Securing power/ventilation/fuel - fire control room
- Initial response /ER evacuation
- CPR - electric shock & asphyxiation victims
- Water cooling (fog/wet blanket) - burn victims
- Don't panic - maintain composure, you have sufficient time to follow all safety procedures and instructions.
- No short-cuts - take the necessary time
- Scott 15 minute air packs - location and use
- Review use of extinguishers and ABC fire classes
- Review location of alarms, fire stations, and equipment including spares
- Invite comment & critique
