ENGINE PROTECTION SYSTEM

The engine protection system is fitted to prevent damage occurring to the main engine plant. The following functions are fitted:

Overspeed. Activated when the engine speed increases over 107% of the MCR. The emergency stop solenoid is activated, which for the MC engine will activate the puncture valve system on the fuel pumps. The overspeed is reset by placing the manoeuvring control in the stop position, and then restarting the engine, once the engine revolutions have fallen.

Shut-down. The engine will shut-down if any of the following sensors are activated:
i)      Lubricating oil low pressure (1.0 bar)
ii)      Thrust block high temperature (85oC)
iii)     Jacket water temperature high (96oC)
iv)     Camshaft oil low pressure (1.5 bar)

The shut-downs can be configured as either cancellable (with a time delay between activation and engine trip), and non-cancellable which will trip the engine immediately. As with the overspeed trip, the shut-down is reset by placing the lever in stop, and then re-starting the engine.

Slow-down. The engine will slow down to dead-slow position when one of the following sensors are activated:
i)      Lubricating oil low pressure (1.5 bar)
ii)      Camshaft oil low pressure (2.0 bar)
iii)     Thrust block high temperature (75oC)
iv)     Piston coolant no flow
v)      Scavenge air temperature high (65oC)
vi)     Oil mist detection high
vii)     Cylinder exhaust temperature high (450o)
viii)    Lubricating oil inlet high temp (60oC)
ix)     Piston coolant high temperature (75oC)

The slow-downs can also be configured as cancellable and non-cancellable. They are reset once the sensor is de-activated, and the engine control level is placed below the slow down level or the "reset slow down" button is pressed.

The emergency run button fitted on the bridge panel will over-ride the slow down function when pressed.
